EU261 & UK261 compensation — frequently asked questions

What is EU261?

EU261 (EU Regulation 261/2004) entitles passengers to €250–€600 in cash compensation when a flight departing the EU, or arriving in the EU on an EU airline, is delayed 3+ hours, cancelled, or overbooked. UK261 is the equivalent rule for UK flights after Brexit.

How much compensation can I get?

€250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500–3,500 km, and €600 for longer flights — provided the arrival delay is 3 hours or more. UK261 pays the equivalent amounts in pounds sterling.

Does my nationality matter?

No. Eligibility depends only on the route and airline, not on citizenship or residency. Anyone on an eligible flight can claim.

What if the airline blames the weather?

Airlines are only excused for genuine "extraordinary circumstances" — severe weather, ATC strikes, security incidents — and must prove it affected that specific flight. Technical faults, crew shortages, and knock-on delays are normally NOT extraordinary and do not excuse payment.

How long do I have to claim?

Deadlines vary by country, from 2 to 6 years. Claim as soon as possible — airlines often reject the first request, and a clear paper trail improves your odds.
